Previewing the Schedule: Is South Alabama a Giant Slayer?

first_imgIt’s one of the most endearing sentiments in sports. David and Goliath. Any given Saturday, the weak can prevail. The unassuming can ruin things for the destined. So it should come as little surprise that there’s been a slight buzz around Oklahoma State’s trip to Alabama this September. Not that Alabama school. Not that one either. South Alabama. The team that beat Mississippi State last year. The same program that played Tennessee close a handful of years ago.Could the Jaguars follow in the footsteps of their conference and in-state rival Troy? Let’s take a look.ParticularsWhen: September 8, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. CDT (Friday night)Where: Ladd Peebles Stadium, Mobile, Alabama. Capacity: 40,600Last Meeting: N/AThis is the first meeting between Oklahoma State and South Alabama which added football in 2008. It’s only been an FBS program since 2012.We will get a good look at the Jaguars during opening week when they head to Oxford to face an Ole Miss program whose off-the-field turmoil shouldn’t stop them from hammering the Jags.OffenseIn 2016, sophomore Dallas Davis took over as the Jaguars’ starting quarterback but battled with injury down the stretch. He still finished second in the Sun Belt Conference with 246 passing yards per game.Davis sat out the spring due to shoulder surgery and his best shot appears to be an “open competition” if he’s on schedule to vie for reps in fall camp. He’ll compete with fellow junior Cole Garvin and former UAB quarterback and teammate of Victor Salako’s, Evan Orth.Regardless of who takes snaps for the Jaguars, they will be replacing virtually all of their targets in the passing game. The top four receivers in 2016 were seniors Josh Magee, Kevin Kutchera, Tyrone Williams and tight end Gerald Everett. Those four represented 2,404 of the Jaguars’ receiving yards in 2016. In fact, 81 percent (2,579) of South Alabama’s 3,169 passing yards were collected by seniors last year as well as 13 of their 15 receiving touchdowns. The Jaguars do return leading rusher, Xavier Johnson who had 831 yards and 10 touchdowns a year ago. Johnson has led the team in rushing the last two years and boasts career totals of 2,225 yards and 17 touchdowns while averaging 5.9 yards per carry.DefenseSouth Alabama did finish second in their conference in passing defense, allowing just 174.6 yards per game and a 1.4:1 TD-to-interception ratio. But let’s not kid ourselves. The Sun Belt is not the Big 12 and the most prolific passing attack they faced was Troy. The chasm in skill players between Oklahoma State and the Troy Trojans is more embarrassment than mismatch. Oh yeah and the Cowboys have a legit Heisman contender in record-setter Mason Rudolph taking snaps. The Jaguars were best if given a long field to try and slow teams down, posting the 29th-best opponent points per long drive (1.17). They allowed an overall opponent points per drive of 2.40 which ranked 77th in 2016. Not great!Key MatchupJeremy Reaves is the veteran leader of the Jaguars’ secondary and returns after a junior season with seven pass breakups, three interceptions, 5.5 tackles for loss and two forced fumbles. He and fellow senior DB Neiko Robinson (three pass breakups and an interception) will have their hands full with what should be the most prolific offense the program has faced in its eight-year history.ConclusionThe simple question is whether the Cowboys take it to the Jaguars or play down to their competition like we’ve seen in the past. The Jaguars beat a bad Mississippi State team last year. Does that put fear into Mike Gundy? Unlikely. But there’s no reason to go mess around with a lesser team on the road.Summer PredictionThis is another game that the Cowboys should control throughout. I’m predicting OSU makes it to 2-0 after a 52-21 win in Mobile. While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member. Who Oklahoma State Should Target at Defensive Tackle For 2018

first_imgLast week we took a look at where Oklahoma State’s 2018 recruiting class stands and which positions they should focus their efforts on with their remaining scholarships. From here I thought it best to break down each of those four positions and look at where OSU is likely to or should focus their efforts. As a recap, OSU still has a maximum of seven scholarships remaining for the 2018 class, but I think they’ll only use four or five. Here are the positions I believe they need to fill:Defensive endCowboy backDefensive tackleLinebackerAdChoices广告We are going to skip the linebacker position, because Kyle Boone already did a great job looking at which recruits Coach Gundy and Co. might focus their efforts on. So first up: the defensive tackle position.OSU’s primary focus should remain on landing junior college standout Tayland Humphrey. We’ve talked about Humphrey, a four-star prospect from Hutchinson Community College, a lot. Earlier this year, Tayland’s brother, John Bolding II, said that he and his younger brother would play at the same school. However, Bolding announced his commitment to FIU back in July. If Humphrey was going to stick to the plan of sticking with his brother, you’d think he would have announced his decision as well.Since it looks like the plan to play together isn’t working out (unless a bonafide blue-chip recruit like Humphrey decides to commit to FIU), where Humphrey ends up is a bit of a crap shoot. However, I do believe OSU is putting a lot of effort into bringing the stud DT to Stillwater. The other name we’ve talked about a lot is three-star local talent Israel Antwine. The former Ole Miss commit has been quiet about his recruitment since decommiting from the Rebels. He currently has offers from more than a dozen teams including OSU, Arkansas, Missouri, TCU, Kansas, and Tulsa. As of now, 247Sports is overwhelmingly predicting Antwine to commit to Texas. The Longhorns made an offer to Antwine when things started looking dicey in Oxford and right before he decommited.Texas may be the “favorites”, but Oklahoma State is likely still in the running. The Cowboys seemed like one of the favorites before he picked Ole Miss, and should still be a team to watch now that he has reopened his recruitment.Oklahoma State is also strongly in the running for three-star DT Moro Ojomo who would immediately win the “best name award” for the 2018 class. Ojomo is 6-foot-2, 267-pound DT from Katy, Texas.Ojomo has offers from 10 schools including OSU, TCU, Arizona State, Ole Miss, Indiana, Houston, SMU, Kansas, Tulane, and Texas State. One 247Sports expert, Jeremiah Glenn of the TCU page HornedFrogBlitz, predicts Ojomo will pick the Cowboys. Glenn has over 71% accuracy on 121 predictions. There is a lot of talk that Ojomo could pick up an offer from Texas if they don’t land another guy or two they’re targeting. If that happens, there would likely be mutual interest. Mojomo doesn’t feel like one that’s going to make his decision soon, so if OSU wants to land him, they’re going to have to keep his attention on Stillwater and away from Austin.Even if OSU lands Humphrey, they would benefit from also adding a four year player at defensive tackle. After watching his highlight reel, I think you’ll agree he would be a welcome addition to the class. Another player of interest for OSU is Sione Vea Kava, an unranked DT at East Los Angeles College. As a freshman last season for the Huskies, Vea Kava totaled 22 tackles, five tackles for a loss, two sacks, and had five blocked kicks, on a team that went 9-2. He also played as both a 3-4 defensive end and a 4-3 pass-rushing defensive tackle. The 6-foot-6, 260-pound Hawaiian native currently has offers from at least nine teams, including OSU, OU, Oregon, Oregon State, Ole Miss, Arizona State, Georgia Southern, Hawaii, and Nevada. I have a feeling, as good as he was his first year, Vea Kava is going to continue to get offers. Getting on Vea Kava and becoming a favorite early, would be a smart move for Coach Gundy and Co.Another solid option at the position is an under-the-radar player in two-star DT Devin Winters.Winters doesn’t currently have an offer from Oklahoma State, but there is interest. He does have offers from 12 teams including Ole Miss, Oregon State, Kansas, Cincinnati, Houston, Tulsa, SMU, UTSA, Louisiana-Lafayette, Kent State, Tulane, and UAB.The 6-foot-4, 245-pound prospect is one on the rise, and likely a priority for Ole Miss. The Rebels offered Winters just a few days before Antwine decommited. With Antwine out, I expect Ole Miss to look to Winters as a replacement for him. While OSU hasn’t looked his way in awhile, Winters feels like a recruit itching to play for a power-5 program over a group-of-5. If OSU were to make an offer and use their Louisiana pipeline to woo Winters, there’s a good chance they could pick up his commitment. Keep an eye on Winters if OSU misses out on multiple other prospects they’re after. While you’re here, we’d like you to consider subscribing to Pistols Firing and becoming a PFB+ member.
