This Japanese Prefecture Appointed a Pokemon as its Governor

first_imgStay on target A Japanese prefecture that previously renamed itself Udon Prefecture (formerly Kagawa Prefecture) due to the fact that its udon noodles are so delicious has gone through another name change, but this time it’s a lot wackier than just a name after a delicious dish. This time, on April 1, the best time to announce anything like this, the head of the Kagawa Tourism Department Yutaro Goja called a meeting to discuss the future of the prefecture.Goja thanked attendees for making it out, then stated that “even the freshest noodles eventually start to become soggy.” Next, he announced that Udon Prefecture would from that day forward be governed by a Pokemon — a Slowpoke, to be exact. “We hereby declare that Udon Prefecture will henceforth be called Slowpoke Prefecture!”Slowpoke then came out to greet the masses as the new prefectural governor, but why was that Pokemon chosen? It’s simple — Slowpoke’s Japanese name is Yadon, which is just close enough to Udon to make it seem like the delicious noodles and the Pokemon are somehow related. But as fun, as it seems that this prefecture really decides to grace Slowpoke with this generous new title, it’s probably just a regular April Fools’ Day joke, as the official Kagawa Prefectural Government website still has Keizo Hamada as its governor. And really who would ever seek out a big, silly bear-like Pokemon as its political leader? Granted, we’ve heard much weirder stories out of Japan, to be fair.Right now, it looks like Slowpoke will still have his day as you can check out the inaugural welcoming for the pink Pokemon in the video above. Who’s next for 2019? Could we get a committee going for Meowth to become a governor? There are a lot more capable Pocket Monsters out there who would thrill to get this job.
