The Purge films have always been this pulp, campy mess, but each entry has done better monetarily than the one before it. That’s probably why we’re going to get a TV series based on a universe where once a year, there are no laws and everybody becomes a vicious killer.James DeMonaco, the writer, director, and creator behind the series, confirmed that he had been approached about making an anthology-style TV show set within the Purge universe. While he dismissed the idea of an outright anthology, he said that it would be “kind of an anthology.”“They came to me about a TV show, my idea is that you do six or seven storylines. And I would kind of intercut them, use flashbacks,” DeMonaco said. The current plan is for the series to unfold over 10 hours (so probably around 10 episodes) and to use the extended run time to tell stories that wouldn’t be possible within 90 minutes. DeMonaco specifically wants to get inside the mind of a “purger.”“Whether it’s revenge or out of passion, but what might be interesting in a TV show is with a flashback narrative, if you start on Purge Night but you go back to show how people have gotten to where they are,” he said. “It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else.”As the years go on, The Purge franchise gets more relevant. Are we getting closer to an actual Purge? Is the satire getting too real? Having Election Year come out in, well, election year wasn’t exactly a subtle jab at modern politics.Whatever you think of The Purge as a current trilogy, there’s something to be said about turning it into a TV series. The franchise has always worked best in an anthology format–exploring different stories set on different Purge Nights or with different groups of people. It allows for more flexibility in the kinds of characters you can introduce, which can be important in a society heavily based in class warfare. It probably should’ve been a TV series in the first place. As for when it could premiere, DeMonaco doesn’t have an answer. However, he did mention that things are moving fast and there could be more details soon.“Not to get into the nuance of how it all goes down, we’re talking about deals right now, money is being spoken about. Things like that,” he said.
