Drake (28-23, 16-8 MVC) clinched the number two seed for next week’s MVC Tournament held in Carbondale, Ill., May 12-14 with the two wins over Bradley (18-28, 12-14 MVC). The Bulldogs won the first game over the Braves by a score of 8-6 and then rallied to win the second game, 10-4. In the sixth inning, Drake busted out for more runs as Pena had a run-scoring single for the first run and then Smith followed with her second home run of the day, another three-run shot, as Drake led 10-4. Smith closed out the game with three quick outs and she improved to 3-2 with the win. She was great in relief as she allowed zero runs on five hits with one strikeout and one walk. Bradley scored three runs in the fifth inning, but Drake held on for the win. In the second game, Bradley jumped out to a 4-0 lead after one and a half innings. The Braves scored two runs in the first and two in the second off Drake starter Mariah McKinnon (Oxford, Iowa). Smith came in for McKinnon with zero outs in the second inning and allowed two runs to score on a RBI single by Maria Schroeder, but escaped further damage as Schroeder was thrown out at second trying to stretch it to a double and ended the inning. Drake started the rally with one run in the bottom of the second inning and then tied the game with three runs in the third inning. In the third Kaitlyn Finneran (Morrison, Ill.) drove in a pair of runs with a RBI single and Ashlie Chambers (Ankeny, Iowa) followed with a run-scoring single to tie the game at 4-4 after three innings.
